Like Canal Town, this is another of Samuel Hopkins Adams' romantic novels, richly documented with obscure and fascinating regional lore, language and customs. Against a warm, colorful yet completely authentic background, Mr. Adams weaves the unusual love story of Obedience (Becky) Webb, a lovely and ambitious young factory girl, and Guy Roy, handsome and wealthy manufacturer. The years between Becky and Guy's first meeting and the day when at last they could find happiness together are marked by events both joyous and tragic--by suspense, murder, a gripping man hung, by Becky's strange marriage to the self-righteous mill owner, Gurdon Stockwell. Not until Stockwell's violent end is the way paved to freedom for Becky and to a new era in an industry which had been notorious for ruthless treatment of its workers.

The period and setting are based on the development of cotton mills and factories in upper New York State in the 1830's, the exploitation of female labor and the establishment of the first humane laws regulating working conditions in the mills. Mr. Adams' painstaking reconstruction of the atmosphere of the times adds immeasurably to the reader's delight in this romance of another day.
